$2,000 and counting...

I have continued to play 1/2 NL 6-handed on Party and am doing well running my initial $200 up to $2,000 as of this post. I have had a few $300-$400 swings the past few nights but mainly upswings or leveling out by the end of the night. Game selection is huge and I took a minor hit when a wildcard sat to my immediate left and would play and raise with any hand. Things are good and I don't plan on ca$hing out or changing levels anytime soon, but instead to stick to 1/2 NL and grind it out, as the majority of these players are horrible.

Question for one of the readers Doug, I use pokertracker as well and used the trial version of Poker Ace HUD until my trial ran out. It pops up a HUD on the screen importing pokertracker stats just like the program you use. Have you tried Poker Ace? What do you recommend? I am going to purchase one of the HUD's later this week.

Home Game
My first game Saturday went great and I will defiantly keep it together and throw it every other Saturday. Congrats to Rob from md-poker for winning the free-roll tournament and to the always high-action River Ed for his substantial cash out. While I plan on playing less live and more online, I do enjoy hosting and seeing the regulars, who are all good people.

What a night!!

...the whistle blows and off to happy hour. I join some friends and we meet up for drinks over at Nottinghams in Columbia, real nice bar but nothing cheap about the prices. I drink from 5pm-9pm with plans to get home and go party in Federal Hill.... well I never make it. I get home around 9'ish I am tired so I take a nap and don't end up waking up till 10:30pm, I jump in the shower but in the long run I was too tired and did'nt just feel like partying anymore so I decide to play some poker on Partypoker.

Another great night, I had my biggest single night win ca$hing for $700+ online. I was two-tableing 1/2 NL again and it just seemed like the drunks were out on a Friday night or something because people were throwing money around with horrible hands and I was getting paid left and right, I would have never imagined my initial $200 investment would grow to $1,560 but it has. Now I have to think do I want to go up to 2/4 or 3/6 NL or just stay at what I am making money at? We shall see.

I am having a live game today and I look foward to the action, always good times.

Another good night on Party

Started the night with $580'ish and ended the night around $850. I had a good run two-tableing 6-handed 1/2 NL on party. I want to hit $1,000 and then some. So far things are looking good and I had some tough calls early in the night but in the end I ran into an ABC hand that paid off rreeeeaalll goooooddd, you can read about it here on md-poker. I hope things keep going UP^^^.

Back Online and Ca$hing so far

A friend transferred over $200 to my party account the other night and things have been going well. I eased back into playing online registering for a $11 - 30 player MTT, which I ended up cashing in at 5th place. I did'nt enjoy the fast moving - large blinds but thats how these low-buyin tourney's go I guess.

I then moved on to the 6-Handed $100 max with .50/1 NL blinds. I love this game as it is often played extremly tight and is easy to bluff/play aggressive and make money. After building it up to $300 or so I moved $150 over to $200 max 1/2 NL (6-handed) and this is where I am here to stay.

After logging off tonight I have ran my initial $200 into $600 playing this ring game. I really think I can turn a serious multi-thousand dollar profit online if I just focus, use good table selection, and don't tilt. Here is an example of a hand that I would have never called in the past but due to experience, focusing on the players, and betting patterns... I just grabbed my balls and called.

Weekend Report

...well I never made it to AC. Not because I could'nt, but really because I just did'nt want to. I think the big factors were 1) I just moved downtown and am having a blast partying down here & 2) AC just does'nt have the same 'ol spark it used too... after 8+ trips in the past 12 months I think I'm gonna have to space the trips out apart a little more.

Instead I threw my first game at the new place and it was enjoyable to watch with plenty of action. I played in it for a few hours before I got cleaned for -$360. I don't recommend playing in your own game and I am not going to try to do it in the future. I should be having games every-other saturday which should be good times.

AC again......?

Last night I received a few calls from some friends that are heading up to AC to party this weekend coming up. It is hard to say no to AC especially when it's to party with some ol' friends from college so I just might have to take up the offer. They have a room booked at $100 and $139 somewhere or another but that is garbage this time of year, and I should be able to score a pokerrated room at Taj or Trop for half that.

Just looking at the photo of the Borgata on the right.... it's so inviting. So much fun there, like an adult playground. Other than that I haven't had that much going on, on the poker front. My game didn't kick off Sunday due to snow issues and players from the county not being able to make it out, but I am pretty confident with the anticipation of some of the players to get out here, that next time around it will be a very good game.

Tonight is league night and I have registered an hour ahead of time, so I will not make the same mistake and listen to the girl (aka the merk) wine and wine about me not registering... Also tonight is GSN's High Stakes Poker which is an obvious Monday night must see.

This should be another exciting week, we'll see how it goes.

The Art of Trash Talking

I took a day off work to get fully settled in my new place and take care of some loose ends. Well thank god that mid-day boring TV decided to give me a gift; a few episodes of WSOP to watch in between errands. I watched a few hands of the 1993 WSOP final table on ESPN Classic and man do those guys look sleazy, back then we were no pocket cams so you did'nt know what anyone had until the hands were flipped up which made it intersting but not as eventfull as GSN's High Stakes.


Then there was the final table featuring Jean-Robert Bellande, Jennifer Harman, and some lucky guy named Lee. Jean-Robert is a trash talker, you might remember him from the guy who kept saying "Good lay down", "Excellent lay down", etc. He runs his mouth as much as Mike Matusow and I like it. I thought Jean-Robert was a nobody but then I pulled up his record in Cardplayer and he cashed multiple times for over half-a-million. Sometimes you never know.

I enjoy trash talking but sometimes it can back fire on you. If you get into a heated argument or pissing contest with another player and end up throwing youself on tilt, then its obviously counter-productive. But on the other hand if you end up throwing other players off their game, more power to you.

I am throwing a game this sunday and am looking foward to hosting a game again. I hosted a game twice a week in college for a year and It was always a good time.

Downtown move & Superbowl XL

Just got all settled in downtown. Went out in Canton saturday night and had a blast, I look foward to all the crazy things that are bound to happen down here.

I went over to Mr. Diggs house for the superbowl in Severn. Played a 1/2 NL cash game during the game that was 6-handed and super-low on action. Things really got bad when I ended up stuck -$349 and there was no action to get a stack like that back up. The loss sucks, but I still had a great time with the half-time entertainment that Mr. Diggs provided and overall group of people, Diggs defiantly can put together a good party.

Tonight is the league game on MD-Poker and I look foward to kicking back watching GSN's High Stakes Poker @ 9pm and playing a little online here and there. More to come later.

Edit: Due to technical difficulties in my new house I was'nt able to sign onto AP until 9:03 so I missed the League Game (Thanks Merk for pointing that out). Instead I watched the high-stakes game and I have a newfound respect for Sam Farha and I felt a little sorry for Daniel Negranaeu getting sucked out time after time, thats poker.

January Report

The month of January was a good one up $935 in live play (edited on 1/31, just won $120). Last night I took my first hit of the year over in an Odenton home game when I decided to kill a few hours before bar hopping in Federal Hill. I sat down around 7pm and I received a run of good hands but inevitably luck overcame good play and I was stuck -$300 in three hours. Here is the two big hands that set me back for the night.

UTG live straddles for $4, called in a few spots, JesseY raises it to $11, I am in SB with JJ I grab a stack of red and splash it out on the felt ($50), folds to JesseY who thinks about it and finally calls. I know he is not calling with a real hand but is going to attempt to out-play me.

Flop: 976 (two hearts)

I think for awhile, put on a little show acting is if I just have high-cards but I want him to go away and I bet $100. He insta-pushes all-in $215, $115 more to call. I think about it am positive he does not have my JJ beat and then he shows a few signs of weakness and I call. I was right he shows 75 (Pair and a gut-shot). Pot: $500+

Turn: 9 (which I welcome, giving me two-pair)

River: 7

What can you do, I made the correct call with my Jacks knowing he was making a move but luck wins the hand.

Another hand flop comes AQ7 (two diamonds) and I have AQ, I bet $40 into a $60 pot. Devo calls with something like 43 diamonds, turn is a 5. I bet $100 he calls again, river is a diamond check-check. I lose to his flush.

I'm not a big fan of telling bad-beats because we all get them but it sucked taking my first lose of the new year to not poor-calls/bad-play, but poor luck. I stay to my word (to not grind it out and to have some fun tonight) and cash out around 10pm to go bar hopping. Federal Hill was a good time and after a few beers I washed off the -$300 lose and focused more on the $815 win for the month. 10k here we come!

Friday night D.C. game stuck up!

My favorite D.C. home game along with my favorite fish, host Ehonda, was unfortunately robbed around 2 a.m. on 1/28/06. I woke up Saturday morning reading the news on MD-Poker and I was blown. I wasn't exactly surprised that the game was robbed, I was more taken back because you never really think something like that will hit close to home. Alot of good conversation developed after the incident and the best advice I read was, "Chalk it up as a bad-beat and move on". Fortunately everyone came out of the robbery without harm and all that was taken was cash and cell phones that can be replaced in due time.

Due to the recent raid at E's I really want to find out a way to work on passing legalization to legalize poker and cardrooms in the state of Maryland. I would gladly make a donation of $100 or more to an organization that has some legalizing poker in the sate of Maryland. I never really cared before, but the recent robberies in our home games is ridiculous.

Slow and steady

Played at E's house friday night. It was a slow night and not as much action and re-buys as usual. I stood steady up around $100-$200 for around 8hrs and finally cashed out fatigued at 3am up $105.

I'm gonna make a deposit on AP early this week and take a shot online again. Other than that I plan on playing the weekly league game tommorow night at 9pm. I played in Game 1 and placed 9th of 66 when I decided to call a bounty's all-in with KQ shooting for the $50 bounty instead of a higher position in the league. After all the cards were out the bounty survived the push with his A9. I missed Game 2 due to a crucial hangover delivered to me by a bartender in Federal Hill. Good times.

What a weekend!!

Finally got around to writing up this trip report on AC last weekend. Overall it was one of the most fun trip's I have had up there, spending less time grinding it out at the poker tables and more time partying and checking out new things AC has to offer.

I arrived Thursday night and checked into the great-priced room at the Tropicana for $55 a night. After settling in I went down to the poker room and was seated at a 1/2 NL. After watching the game for awhile it was very weak and I was able to make $250 in no time, there was a 2/5 NL directly behind me that I eyed up every hour or so but it was full of some solid-local-regulars that I did'nt want to mix with in my tired state. I hit the sack +$250 and look foward to tommorow.

I wake up around 11am and decide to use my ticket for the free winter buffer special that came with the room, not a chance! The line is a mile long full of old people who just can't miss up a free meal. Instead I go to the poker room which is a ghost town on a Friday morning, I sit down at a 4/8 Limit table order some food, move over to the 1/2 NL as soon as I can. The action is dead and I say I'm outta here off to Taj which I know will have mid day action.

Taj Mahal was packed with people as usual, I love the Taj for its good people (alot of old school guys and average joes) and open poker room. I sit down at the 1/2 NL and make a mistake of playing VERY LOOSE in an already loose game. Next thing you know im in the game for -$700 and thing's are'nt looking good, the weak-deep-stack's have stood up but somehow I build my $150 back up to $630. A friend from college call's me say's he is on his way up, and I grab a poker room rated room at Taj for $88 and go upstairs to take an hour nap. I come back down after my nap sit at a 1/2 NL and make $200 in an hour. Overall +$130 for the day.

We head out around 10pm to go hit up the Babes of Borgota party at the MIXX. We arrive at The Borgota and decide to play some floor games to grab some free drinks before we go in, every game is completly packed and they have bumped the stakes of all games to a $25 min on a friday night. I find a roulette table plump down $200 and pray for a waitress that never comes. After 15 mins we decide Roulette is no fun sober and we make are way over to the $7 drafts at BAR. BAR was a good time but around 12am we head over to MIXX. If you have never been and are a frequent AC'er I HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking this place out. The Babes of Borgota party was off the hook. Beautiful, Grade A, girls were dancing on the bar, boxes, and were wearing barely anything. The DJ for the night, DJ AM, was one of the best DJ's I have heard in a long time, he had a talent to mix hip-hop with cliche bar rock songs and it sounded great. Around 3am'ish I am hammered and we decide to head back to the Taj. We grab a cab, mess around with the driver, make some drunk phone calls, and then decide we are going to see the Bill Cosby show tommorow as we see a billboard for his show at the Showboat on the way to Taj. We get to Taj which felt empty but I dont know things begin to blur right about now. We get lost in some long hall way with a Horse and finally find Casbah which felt like it was on the other side of the world from the poker room. Before we even get in we are both patted down by P.Diddy bodyguard look-alikes and we get a feeling this place won't be anything like MIXX. And it was'nt.... The club itself is small, a wierd crowd, dancers were ok, and the bartender could have been my dad. Cashbah was beat and we hit the sack.

Saturday I headed over to the Borgota to play some 2/5 NL. I sit down at a new table and I could'nt be happier. It was the weakest 2/5 NL I have ever sat at with $15 raises pre-flop (what is this 1/2 NL or 2/5 NL) and a handfull of guys who have no idea what they are doing. An older guy sits down a rack of green ($2,500) and says he wan'ts to play while he is waiting for the 10/25 NL . He puts $500 in play and $2,000 on the rail. While this seems intimidating at first, it turns out the guy is loose-weak and I am sure the 10/25 guys lick their chops when he comes into play. It just goes to show, no matter what the level there are occasional fish. Moneybags drops -$500 and is called for his high-stakes game, oh well I never got a shot. About four hours into the game the deadmoney has busted and is replaced by some AC regulars but it is still semi-weak with $15-$20 as the standard raise pre-flop. I end up cashing out +$105 and did'nt see much action with my tight play.

Here is two hands by a very good AC regular, we will call Mike, against a tourist we will call "Meathead" and another tourist we will call "Online Pro Live Donkey (OPLD)".

Hand 1
Meat head is just that, a big offy football looking guy, well Meathead raises $20 pre-flop gets two callers, the button and Mike in the small blind. Pot $60

Flop 652 (rainbow) - Meathead pushes all-in for $130, folds to Mike who drops in the think tank and finally calls with K6. Turn is a blank, River an 8. Meathead shows A8. Good call by Mike as he knew he had nothing, luck card for the donkey.

Hand 2
OPLD raises it to $20, called in 5 spots Mike calls in BB with 92os (loose but a good player). Flops - 924. Checked to OPLD who bets $40 into a $100 pot, folds to Mike who bumps it to $140. OPLD thinks for about 5 minutes and then finally calls. Turn is an 8, Mike goes all-in for $300'ish, OPLD says I don't think you have it and calls. Mike show's 92 vs OPLD AA??? River A. Wow Mike takes two brutal hits back-to-back, poker is a sick game!!

I leave Borgota go drink in the Quarter at Tropicana with some friends and call it a weekend. Up around $500 for the weekend, around $300 after expenses. A last note: I never got to see Bill Cosby, tickets were sold out but I still had a great trip.

Ca$hed at Pops & I am headed to AC

Played 1/2 NL at Pops house last night down in Severn. The action was unusually slow and pots small, but I was still able to pull off a little profit of $120 after 8 hours or so. Should have pulled over $400 but Devo has a four-leaf clover shoved up his ass and pulled a two-outer to chop a $700 pot with me. Here was the hand.

One player limps, folds to Devo who raises to $12, I call in SB with AJos, Nelly calls. Pot $38

Flop: KQT (two spades), Nelly bets $25, Devo goes all-in $700+, I call $300+, Nelly folds. Pot is almost $700. Devo flips over J9os for bottom straight, I flip over broadway, guy next to me says he folded an Ace.

Turn: A (of spades)

River: A

Devo the luck box hits them both, unreal. He's a good guy, I just would have liked to of raked in that monster. Heres the % but it is slightly off since it does'nt take into account one of the aces were folded, I think was somewhere between 92-95% to win the hand instead of tie.

On another note: I think I am heading to Atlantic City for four days this upcoming thursday through next monday. I look foward to heading out there and bringing home some green. I'll keep everything posted.

First Win of 2006

I played in E's Monday afternoon 1/2 NL game the other day and I had a great time. I bought in for $200 and had a nice run of cards from the start, turning the $200 into $400, then $600 and then up to $800. Once I got up to $800, I realized of my many wins at E's house I have never cashed for over $1,000, so I set a goal to break the 1k mark. 8hrs into the game I began to tire and I decided to play one more orbit and then cash out when UTG for my $800 or so. Well all the sudden I am dealt KK in MP and my 1k mark is offered to me on a silver platter. Here was the hand:

UTG Big John playfully raises to $4, one call, I re-raise to $16, button calls, SB calls, Big John re-raises to $50 as he had done earlier in the game to put pressure on another player, I think for a few seconds am positive he doesn't have rockets and re-raise to $200 (roughly the size of his stack). Fold, Fold, Big John thinks about it and says "Alright I'm all-in" and throws it in, total pot around $480ish. I flip over KK vs his AKos. I win this I break my 1k mark. Flops garbage, turns an Ace. Roughly 69% to win the hand but that's poker. I cash out after the next hand for $600, a nice $400 profit to start the new year.

Other key hands in the game. I have JJ and talk Tammy into folding her QQ when I bet $60 on the flop, she raises it to $160 and I go all-in $300+. I quickly realize she has QQ so I had to talk her out of it and after five minutes of deliberation she folds and I wipe my brow. Good game, I feel I played well and was only one-bad-beat away from 1k which would have been nice.

New Years Resolutions

The new year brings a clean slate for poker, everyone is back to zero. I finished the year in the green in live games and in the red online. I am going to fine tune my game as much as I can this month and I thought of a few good resolutions to stick too. I want to focus more of my game online because I feel that is where the real money is made. I will make another $500 deposit or so in a week or two to take another shot. This time I think I am going to stick to 5/10 because I believe it is easier than 3/6. Here are a few resolutions:

1. Get my home game up and running by early Feb
2. Make $10k+ overall this year playing poker
3. End the year in the positive playing online
   
4. Focus/read more on limit and tournment play
5. Play better against poor players

Monte Carlo Millions & WSOP TOC

Phil Ivey is sick. His relentless aggressive style and precision reads are attributes that every amateur poker player must admire. I saw him make some great calls, laydowns, and overall fantastic play. He left in third place to another players suckout, sad to see him go. It is easy to see why Phil Ivey is one of the best poker players around.

I also got a glimpse of WSOP Tournament of Champions the other night and I look forward to watching the full 3hr show. It seemed very entertaining as Mike Matusow psychology runs the table, local MD player Steve Danneman jumps on the Helmuth bashing wagon, and overall some good poker looks to be played. I wish I remembered more but I passed out about an hour into the episode because I was drunk at 2am (it was a good weekend!).

Weekend Report (12/23 - 12/25)

I finally got out and hit up some live games this weekend. Thursday night I went down to a game in Crofton, where I played in a short-handed ring game playing Omaha and a custom version of 7 Card Stud. Overall I did well up $60 for the night, the game was ok but by 1:30 A.M. all the dead money was gone and it was pointless to trade chips back and forth with solid players so I walked away. There were some good people/players but the cash game was a joke, it was a $4 rake and no dealer?? That is bullshit, same rake as AC but in a half-ass setting. I will not be going back to this ring game and do not recommend it.

Friday hit up E's game and overall it was a fairly solid 11 handed table. The extra player does make a huge difference in play, as people just play their cards, there was little bluffing, and it seemed like the orbits moved around a little slower. I prefer 9-6 handed as it just gives you more flexibility in the actions you can make. There was some sick hands and alot of action. Overall I did well cashing out up $145 and left around 4 a.m. chewing two pieces of this Jolt gum, that hd_ryder on mdpoker recommended and it was great, kept me awake the whole ride home.

Good Reads and Re-evaluation

It feels like I have taken a three week (live) break on poker and I have taken that time to catch up on some reading and re-evaluating some leaks in my game. I read a good article today about Defending Blinds in Limit Hold 'Em which was a big flaw in my game. As quoted from another Cardplayer article:

"Over the course of your poker career, you will lose money in the blinds. People hate hearing and believing this, but it'’s true. No matter how well you play, it is simply a terrible idea to put money into a pot from out of position without looking at your hand. No amount of post-flop skill can make up for it. Obviously, some people will lose a lot more than others, but all of us will be net losers in the blind positions."

Just like Pete said in a commented post below "some players just cant win on some sites". I am thinking of taking another $200-500 shot at AP or maybe Pokerstars, but I am leaning towards AP as to try something new. Partypoker and I were just not meant to be. I think I will wait another month or so before I take another stab at online poker, spend some time relaxing and reading on the poker front.

Moving on up to the East Side!

My Lansdowne game is now closed as I will be moving in mid January to Butchers Hill, next to Canton, in downtown Baltimore. I can't wait to get down in the city where there is always something going on. I am taking my poker table & chairs with me and I should have a game up in running downtown by Febuary. As for poker I have'nt played online since I went bust last week and I have'nt played live since E's about three weeks back so its been awhile. More to come later.

It's over... the Chihuahua pissed on me

If in my last post I was 'jacked in the face' this one I got kicked in the balls, hit by a car, the car went in reverse ran over me again, then a heard of elephants stampeded over what was left, and last but not least a little Chihuahua comes over and pisses on me for good measure. Thats what happened to me today on partpoker. I was sick today so I missed work and played some Partpoker with around $280 that I had left. I was two-tabling $100/NL and piece by pice I began losing big hand after big hand, next thing you know I'm down to a single table, and then finally down to $50/NL. It was BRUTAL. I even took a break and chilled out for a bit but nothing can stop poor luck. I lost some big hands to 2-3-4 outers over and over. At the very bottom of this post you will see the final hand that finished me off, guy call's my all-in with a gut-shot hits it on the river (pretty much sums up the day).

I look over some records and I figure I am up around $200-$400 on Pokerstars and down $1,100-1,300 on Partypoker. I play tight, play good cards, but I just can't seem to beat online poker. I looked over my 5,000+ hands on partytracker and I am actually down with AKos and stuck over $100 with AQos?? Two strong hands that just don't pay off or I'm playing them wrong.
